During his time as a deep sea diver, Alec was involved in the raising/salvaging of the Argentine Submarine, "Sante Fe" which was sunk by the Royal Navy during the Falkland's War plus the salvage of the first ever Harrier & Tornado aircraft ever built. Both of which crashed with loss of life. Some of these dives were record breaking and involved equipment used for the first time.

We were in a storm/ hurricane force winds off Washington, Oregon, Northern California coast , I think it was 1977, ocean going tugboat Seaspan Monarch ( Harold A. Jones) two barges of cut lumber bound for Long Beach California, we were in the storm about 11 days, hundred mile an hour winds, seas to fifty feet! Tugboat leghth 137 ft barges on tandem tow about 3000 feet behind, barges 75 feet by I think 300 feet! It was one heck of a ride, extremely exhausting not a whole lot of sleep. Incredible respect for cook who put out meals every day, unbelievable!
Sounds like your trip was the stuff memories are mane of. Good job the tow ropes withstood the strain.
Are you ever scared in seas like that ? At what point does fear kick in & you're utterly terrified? have you ever caught that moment on camera? Does having a calm captain there help mitigate everyone's fears?
Those who get scared do not do a second trip. It’s always best to not think about all the things that could go wrong. I had one Captain who admitted to being scared but he only ever admitted it to me.
Nighttime oh my 🥺🥺🥺🫣🫣

This must be an exceedingly well maintained vessel, most boats make so much noise in rough seas like this, it's like every swell is a catastrophe. So scary so so so scary.

@@Bigwavemaster1 Right on. I watched the Sea Ranger, about four months ago. It was terrifying. So many questions. But when I saw that rig listing like that, and the support boats were too far away to intervene. Also with the ballast tanks not being used properly. And, the chain reservoirs being filled up with water, because of a engineering flaw. YIKES. I was horrified. So, now I have a new obsession with watching these disasters. You do good work. Thanks. I would like to be on a rig for a period of time, that would give me an opportunity to write the outline for a book. Is there any contact information for this endeavor?
@@vallealversonn5973The North Sea industry is like a secret society so no chance of gaining access. They don’t want the outside world knowing what goes on. I was eventually banned from filming which is why I left the job.

Spent a large part of my life on Semi-Submersible Rigs in the North Sea. Used to love the real rough weather like shown in this video. Jokingly we would call this "Spot The Standby Boat Weather" and literally it sometimes was so rough that the standby boat would disappear from view apart from the top of their masts such was the size of the waves. I used to feel for the guys working ships in this weather as on a semi sub motion is much reduced.
My very first trip on this job was at the Deep Sea Pioneer at the Argyle Field. The weather became so bad and the rig getting so battered that they were preparing to shoot their anchors away. I was glad I was on a ship that could roll with the waves and not on that rig 😂
@@bobrodgersonsmostlymotorcy9265 wow that has to be quite the job. I've only watched the documentaries on Discovery but it sure looks wild out there

Those people earn their bread with so many difficulties that we owe them respect.

Got out after two years under honorable conditions I should have joined the Army The Navy taught me how to weld so I did learn something useful
Welding is a great trade.
Interesting career - wow ! I admire your dogged persistence and polite efforts to engage with him because he appeared to give up words as reluctantly as the sea gives up a sunken ship - and that is in no way a criticism - he is like me , not much of a talker . It's admirable that you have taken the time to document his life and some of our own history - sober moment remembering how the sea & air are very unforgiving environments . Great stuff . [One thing though - I was pretty disappointed at the 19:14 mark with the censorship .]
The censorship was because family of the deceased are still alive. Alec was describing how they distanced themselves from the realities of their job.
My dad was in the navy and I had no idea it was like this. He’s passed but I wish I could talk to him about it. He didn’t say anything about it. I was born when he was at sea. 1961
The storms were the only reason I stayed at sea for so long. How long was your father at sea for?
thias sound. Seems like „windshear…windshear“. But mention waves….
Couldn’t have put it better myself.
I was one of those vertigo sufferers I was in the USNavy and I couldn’t shake getting sea sick I suffered bad could not get out of my rack unable to eat or work I asked for shore duty but the wouldn’t do it I
How long were you in the navy?
I always said that I respect all people that do this job. Because it scares the crap out of me being out there in all of that water. Hell no. I can't do it.

what about sea sickness? such experienced crew even have that?
Yep! Some do.
Being able to cook in heavy seas is pretty impressive
It certainly is. He still produces 3 full meals for 15 crew every day. He even has a couple of his own videos. ua-cam.com/play/PLG-lkGl9kpwRzAqAR1VH-iY5Z7hKB7slq.html&si=V3DA4nvMuLeMMaQ-
Sir, I ask permission to save this video
You may save this v😊
They need a bigger boat, with a better stabilizer.
Don’t have stabilisers.
If I didn't get motion sickness, I would like to take a three day ride on a rolling sea. But anything more than three days would get very boring . Would get island fever. There's absolutely nothing to do out there, in the middle of nowhere. Even though it's a large boat, it's still too confining. Would hate having to work in that small world every day. The boredom would be far worse than any storm.
There’s always something to do on a working ship even during a storm.
